The Leonberger was originally breed to resemble a lion. It is known to be a faithful, intelligent, and friendly dog who adores the company of children.
The Leonberger dislikes being alone and thrives where they are loved and part of the family circle. It is their lively, fun-loving devotion to their family that makes them a true family dog. Also referred to as the Gentle Giant, the Leonberger is considered man's best friend where ever they may be... land or water. Leos are known to excel in water work and work as enthusiastically as they play. At the same time, Leos are just as content in the living room surrounded by their family.
This remarkable character doesn't happen by accident. A dog of this size and strength, if undisciplined, can easily become a real problem. Although they are considered the Gentle Giants, their power and size requires proper socialization and training as early as 8 weeks until they reach maturity. (Keep in mind, this breed doesn't reach maturity until 3 years of age.)
The decision to bring a Leo into your home as a family member should not be made lightly. They require patient, consistent love combined with positive reinforcement, as well as regular exercise and a properly balanced diet. If all of these requirements have been met, there is no doubt, the Leonberger can become an intricate member of your family.
Our experience
Our experience of our own Leonberger is that they adore company and being with you.
Our dog loves to lie on the kitchen floor and is a picture of contentment in the noise made by 3 children, a TV and probably a conversation, all at the same time.
Training
We trained our Leonberger in basic training like sitting, staying, coming when called and walking beside us when off the lead. We found her very intelligent and easy to train. We attended a few show training classes and brought her to a few shows. This was good for her to be with other dogs and people, she is extremely confident and easy with people.
